What is a Snap Gun

A snap gun is what most people call a lock pick gun. It is a tool used by authorized personnel or locksmiths to help with lockpicking. How it works is that a steel rod is inserted into the lock, then the snap gun “shoots” against the lock pins.  This frees up the cylinder and allows it to be turned by using a tension wrench. It is an alternative to regular or conventional lock pick tools and techniques.

Snap Gun vs Manual Picks

When it comes down to it, whether or not to choose a snap gun over manual picks comes down to personal preferences. A lot of locksmiths or lock pick enthusiasts usually have both in their toolbox. A majority has a snap gun and a few manual picks to use as a supplement.

However, the general advice is that it’s better to learn with manual picks since you learn the proper techniques. Snap guns are more often used by locksmiths since it is quicker and they may need to open a number of locks for their business.

The reality is one is not better than the other. They just offer their own sets of advantages and disadvantages. One is better for learning while the other is better when you need to do fast work. Either way, it wouldn’t hurt to have both tools in your box just in case.
